Is It Worth Repairing a Power Tool?

When a power tool stops working, the first question is often whether it's worth repairing — or whether you're better off replacing it.

The answer isn't always obvious. A good-quality tool with a relatively simple fault can have plenty of life left in it, while sometimes the cost of parts and labour means replacement makes more sense.

At Dorset Power Tools, we've been repairing and servicing tools and equipment for decades. Here are some of the things we consider.

How old is the tool?

Age alone doesn't mean a tool isn't worth repairing.

Older professional-quality tools can be extremely well made, and if parts are still available, repairing one can make much more sense than replacing it.

On the other hand, parts availability can sometimes make an otherwise straightforward repair impractical.

What actually went wrong?

A tool that suddenly stops working isn't necessarily finished.

Switches, brushes, bearings, leads and other components can wear or fail over time. Other faults can be more significant.

The important thing is finding out what has actually failed before deciding the tool isn't worth saving.

What did the tool cost — and what would it cost to replace?

This is often the deciding factor.

If you're looking at a quality trade tool or piece of equipment that would cost hundreds — or thousands — of dollars to replace, getting it assessed can be worthwhile.

For inexpensive tools, replacement may sometimes be the more economical option.

How important is the tool to you?

There's another consideration that doesn't always show up in the numbers.

Tradies often have tools they've used for years and know inside out. Sometimes an older machine does exactly what you need it to do, and the latest replacement isn't necessarily better for your particular job.
